Visiting Videy Island

Yesterday turned out to be another beautiful, sunny day so we decided to put our city welcome cards to good use and visit Videy Island, which is a short ferry ride from Reykjavik. When we asked the very nice woman at the tourist information office she said there are two places where you can take a ferry to the island - from the harbor closest to our hotel, which is about a 10 - 15 minute walk and the other is from a ferry terminal about an hour's walk away, so off we headed to the harbor. When we got there, though, the very nice woman at that tourist office there explained that ferry only leaves at noon and it was now 1 p.m. Since we had yet to figure out the bus schedule that well and the day was wearing on, we turned around and headed out on our much longer, approximately 4-5 mile walk. Not complaining here.......the weather was lovely and the exercise was enjoyable.....but still.

Anyway, we made it to the ferry a bit sweaty and hungry, but that's okay. Did I mention it's a short ferry ride? Well, it's got to be the worlds shortest ferry ride, I'm sure. You get on a small boat that can't hold more than 25 people and go literally 5 minutes across the water and there you are. Voila! Videy Island's claim to fame is that it's home to the Imagine Peace Tower created by Yoko Ono. It has a great story and if you want to learn more about it, check out the website:

There isn't much else on the island except excellent walking trails where you view some great sculptures and lots of bird life. With the perfect weather, it was a really peaceful and relaxing place to be.
