Icelandic Whaling

Unfortunately, I deleted a picture from the camera that would have accompanied this post, but it was quite the juxtaposition of whale hunting ships on one side of he harbor and whale watching ships on the other. We found out that Iceland - for some unknown reason - reinstated whale hunting in 2007 even though less than 1% of Icelanders report eating whale meat. Apparently one of the more common species of whales seen in the area are the Minke whales and according to the bulletin at the whale watching office, they've seen many of the same whales when they go out which is causing them some concern that the local population may not be as numerous as they had hoped.

Hindsight is 20/20 of course, but we were thinking that had we known before heading here that Iceland participated in whale hunting, we're not sure we would have decided to come here. Of course, I'm sure most Icelanders do not support the practice but it does make you think about what you want your travel dollars to support. Food for thought as we go along........
